introduction

My interest in architecture and cities is in their relationship to our own biology. Not only because of the structural similarities, the same joiners, patterns and shapes, or merely because these constructions seem to take on personality through their façade or the space they fill in the landscape, but also in the way in which we change our own behaviour in their presence.

More recently my oil paintings have been strongly influenced by the graffiti scribbled, stenciled and pasted as notes on almost every available surface in Beijing. These individual advertisements, phone numbers advertising services such as the preparation of fake certificates and documents, prostitutes, etc., are routinely painted over by the authorities in mismatching tones of grey. This type of graffiti is not unique to this city but more prevalent here than anywhere else I've seen, so prevalent that virtually no other kind exists.

All of the works on this site are made in response to the cities that I have lived in, particularly to Melbourne, Hong Kong, Taipei and Beijing.
